Chinese family digs through 10 tons of garbage all night to find bag of gold worth $217,000

A family in China’s Jiangxi Province successfully recovered over 1 kg of gold bars and jewelry, valued at 1.5 million yuan ($217,000), after an exhaustive overnight search through ten tons of compressed waste. The incident began on March 8, when a woman in Hengfeng County brought the gold home to sell, only for her sister to mistake the bag for trash and discard it in an outdoor bin.

By the time the owner realized the error at 11 a.m., local police confirmed via surveillance footage that a sanitation truck had already transported the waste to a processing plant in neighboring Yiyang County. The family rushed to the facility, successfully intercepting three trucks just moments before they were scheduled for incineration. With the help of the fleet captain and local authorities, the most likely vehicle was diverted to a separate site where its ten-ton load of compressed garbage was unloaded for manual inspection.

Equipped with headlamps and protective gear, eight family members began sifting through the refuse around 7 p.m. The owner described the experience as "looking for a needle in a haystack," noting that the entire operation felt like a desperate gamble. After searching through the night and taking only a brief rest at dawn, the family discovered familiar household waste—specifically orange peels—which signaled they were close to the target. Shortly thereafter, they found the bag of gold completely intact.

Following the ordeal, the woman sold a portion of the gold, admitting she no longer felt comfortable keeping such high-value assets at home. She expressed deep gratitude toward the police and sanitation workers who coordinated the logistics and secured the site, allowing the family to conduct their search. While sanitation officials confirmed their role in facilitating the recovery, they noted that workers did not participate in the physical search due to the high value of the missing items.

This remarkable recovery is part of a recent string of similar incidents worldwide. Just last month, police in Italy assisted a man in retrieving 20 gold bars worth $142,000 mistakenly thrown away with household trash, while a similar case was reported in Dubai involving gold worth approximately $13,600.
