Japan doubles residency requirement for naturalization to 10 years New Tab ↗
The Japanese Ministry of Justice has officially enacted a major policy shift regarding national citizenship, doubling the minimum residency requirement for naturalization from five years to 10 years, effective April 1, 2026. This move, which aligns naturalization standards with the existing 10-year requirement for permanent residency, signifies a tightening of borders under the direction of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.

The new regulations introduce significantly stricter financial and social oversight for all applicants. Verification of tax payments will now span a five-year period—up from just one year—while checks for social insurance contributions have doubled to a two-year requirement. Crucially, these updated rules are retroactive, meaning they apply even to foreign nationals who have already submitted their applications but have not yet received a decision.

According to government officials, the extension is intended to ensure "social compatibility" and a deeper level of integration into Japanese society. Prime Minister Takaichi previously expressed concerns that the former rules were too lenient, prompting a broader package of foreign resident policy measures compiled earlier this year. Beyond the time spent in the country, the Ministry continues to evaluate "good conduct," financial stability, and the ability to communicate effectively in Japanese as core components of the assessment.

The legal process remains rigorous, requiring applicants to renounce their original nationality and prove they hold no affiliations with groups opposing Japan’s constitutional order. While the bar for entry has been raised, the demand for Japanese citizenship remains steady. In 2025, the Civil Affairs Bureau granted citizenship to over 9,200 individuals out of approximately 14,000 applicants, with Chinese and South Korean nationals making up the majority of those approved.

As of mid-2025, the number of foreign nationals holding permanent residency in Japan stood at over 932,000, a slight increase from previous periods. However, with these new hurdles in place, the path from residency to full citizenship has become significantly more demanding. The Ministry’s focus remains firmly on ensuring that new citizens have demonstrated a long-term, stable commitment to the nation’s social and economic fabric.

Cambodia monitors new Covid variant New Tab ↗
Cambodian health officials have launched a specialized surveillance program to track BA.3.2, a new SARS-CoV-2 subvariant nicknamed "Cicada." While the variant has already been identified in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Japan, the Cambodian Department of Communicable Disease Control (CDC) reports that there is currently no evidence suggesting it causes more severe illness or poses a significant threat to public health.

Despite the low immediate risk, the CDC is proactively intensifying its monitoring efforts and preparing emergency response protocols. This heightened state of readiness is designed to ensure that the healthcare system can react swiftly should the "Cicada" strain begin to circulate within local communities.

Public health experts, including Dr. Quach Mengly, have urged the public to remain calm, noting that Cambodia is in a strong position to handle new variants. He pointed to the nation’s high vaccination coverage and the current summer season—environmental factors that typically hinder the rapid spread of respiratory viruses—as key reasons why a major outbreak is unlikely.

The clinical profile of BA.3.2 appears consistent with previous Omicron-related strains. Patients typically report familiar symptoms such as a cough, fever, and headache. Medical professionals continue to advise citizens to maintain standard hygiene practices, such as regular handwashing, as the most effective defense against infection.

On the front lines of prevention, the Ministry of Health has significantly tightened quarantine and infection control measures at Techo International Airport. During a high-level inspection on March 28, Health Minister Chheang Ra stressed the necessity of "proactive discipline" among border officials to intercept potential cases at the country's primary points of entry.

On a global scale, the World Health Organization (WHO) has officially classified BA.3.2 as a "variant under monitoring." This designation indicates that while the strain bears genetic markers that could affect its behavior, it does not yet meet the criteria for a "variant of interest" or "variant of concern," allowing health agencies worldwide to gather more data without triggering widespread restrictions.

Seoul seeks to calm rush to buy rubbish bags over fears of shortage amid Middle East war New Tab ↗
In an effort to prevent panic buying, South Korea’s energy minister issued a public reassurance on March 30 regarding the national supply of plastic rubbish bags. The statement follows a dramatic spike in sales in Seoul, where demand for the essential household items jumped nearly fivefold last week. Major retailers have already begun imposing purchase limits as residents worry that energy supply disruptions caused by the ongoing Middle East war could halt the production of plastic by-products.

South Korea’s waste management system is uniquely sensitive to oil supply, as household trash can only be legally disposed of in specialized bags sold at retail outlets. With daily sales surging to 2.7 million bags in the capital alone, Energy Minister Kim Sung-whan took to social media to clarify that the country possesses ample capacity to utilize recycled raw materials. He emphasized that there is enough stock and production capability to meet the nation's needs for more than a year without a price hike.

The minister also outlined a "worst-case" contingency plan to ensure public sanitation is maintained. If standard production were to fail, the government would consider authorizing the use of general plastic bags for waste disposal. "You will never be in a situation where you are forced to store garbage at home," Kim stated, aiming to de-escalate the anxiety driving the current hoarding behavior.

The underlying cause of this domestic shortage is the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iranian forces following the outbreak of hostilities involving the U.S. and Israel on February 28. Because the majority of South Korea’s oil imports transit through this chokepoint, the government has been forced into "wartime" economic footing. This includes a 25 trillion won supplementary budget and the first fuel price caps implemented since the 1997 financial crisis.

In addition to managing the supply of goods, the South Korean government is actively promoting a national energy-saving campaign. Citizens are being urged to adopt lifestyle changes such as taking shorter showers, utilizing bicycles for transportation, and charging electronic devices during daylight hours. These measures reflect the growing pressure on Asia’s fourth-largest economy as it navigates a prolonged and volatile international energy crisis.

3 million Indian officials to begin counting world's largest population New Tab ↗
The Indian government is embarking on a monumental logistical endeavor: the first fully digital census in the nation's history. Starting on April 1, 2026, more than 3 million public officials will begin the year-long task of counting every individual across the world’s most populous country. Originally scheduled for 2021, the decadal survey was significantly delayed due to the logistical and health constraints of the Covid-19 pandemic, making this update more critical than ever for national planning.

The 2026 census introduces a modern, two-phase approach to data collection. The initial phase, which begins this week, focuses on house listing and evaluating general housing conditions across India's vast geography. Following this, a second phase will dive deeper into the specific demographic, economic, and social parameters of the inhabitants. For the first time, the government is also providing a short window for citizens to register themselves through an online portal, though this will be followed by traditional door-to-door physical surveys to ensure no one is missed.

A major focal point of this particular census is the inclusion of caste data. This reflects the deep-rooted nature of India's social stratification, which continues to influence everything from local politics to the allocation of college seats and government jobs. While the collection of such sensitive data is a point of contention—with some critics arguing it reinforces ancient divisions—the government maintains that accurate figures are essential for directing affirmative action and welfare programs to the communities that need them most.

Beyond social metrics, the census is vital for understanding India’s "demographic dividend." Since overtaking China as the world's most populous nation in 2023, India has leaned into its status as a young country. Economists view this massive population not as a burden, but as a potentially unmatched pool of skilled labor. The data collected over the next year will help policymakers refine infrastructure, education, and healthcare strategies to support this burgeoning workforce as other global economies face the challenges of aging populations.

Technologically, this survey represents a massive leap forward. By recording data digitally for the first time, Census Commissioner Mritunjay Kumar Narayan expects to release specific data sets much faster than in previous decades. This shift is intended to improve both the accuracy of the count and the transparency of the findings, addressing past concerns regarding the reliability of publicized census information.

The entire process is expected to reach its conclusion by March 2027. Once finished, the results will provide a definitive snapshot of a nation in transition—one balancing its ancient social structures with its modern ambitions of becoming a dominant global power. For the millions of officials hitting the streets this April, it marks the start of one of the largest administrative exercises ever attempted by any single country.

Russian military plane crashes in Crimea, 29 dead: TASS New Tab ↗
A Russian Antonov-26 military transport aircraft crashed while flying over the Crimean Peninsula on Tuesday evening, resulting in the deaths of all 29 people on board. The Russian Defense Ministry, as reported by the TASS news agency on Wednesday, confirmed that contact with the plane was lost at approximately 6:00 p.m. Moscow time during a scheduled flight.

Search and rescue teams successfully located the wreckage, confirming that the tragedy claimed the lives of six crew members and 23 passengers. Initial reports from the crash site indicate that the aircraft was completely destroyed upon impact, leaving no survivors among the military personnel and passengers traveling on the transport mission.

Preliminary investigations by the Defense Ministry suggest that the incident was likely the result of a technical failure. Experts examining the wreckage noted a lack of evidence suggesting any external impact or hostile action, pointing toward mechanical or systems issues as the primary focus of the ongoing inquiry.

The Antonov-26 is a twin-engine turboprop that has been a workhorse for military transport for decades. This latest crash adds to a series of recent aviation incidents involving aging military hardware, prompting further questions regarding the maintenance and operational safety of the fleet during active regional deployments.

5 dấu hiệu giày bệt "hết date", bạn đừng cố đi (hoặc mua lại) New Tab ↗
Chuyện giày hiệu bán giá 2 triệu của Á hậu Huyền My đang trở thành tâm điểm bàn tán hài hước nhất hôm nay.

Want to improve your memory? The right type of exercise can give it a boost New Tab ↗
The concept of memory is famously elusive; names, grocery lists, and exam material often seem to vanish just as we need them most. However, recent scientific insights suggest that the solution to this cognitive "flutter" might be as simple as a brisk walk or a short session on a stationary bike. While it has been long understood that aerobic exercise enhances general brain health and slows the effects of aging, new research indicates that even a localized, brief bout of cardio can provide an immediate and measurable boost to our ability to store and retrieve specific information.

At the heart of this phenomenon is the hippocampus, a deep-seated brain structure critical for learning. Previous studies have already demonstrated that consistent moderate exercise can physically increase the volume of the hippocampus over time. Interestingly, the timing of physical activity appears to be a crucial variable; research suggests that exercising four hours after a learning session may be more effective for long-term retention than working out immediately. Unlike stretching, which shows little cognitive benefit, aerobic activity seems to trigger a specific biological "cementing" process that helps new data stick.

Until very recently, the exact mechanics of how exercise influences human memory remained a mystery, as standard brain scans lack the resolution to capture rapid electrical shifts. To bridge this gap, neuroscientists at the University of Iowa collaborated with neurosurgeons to monitor patients with drug-resistant epilepsy who already had electrodes implanted for surgical evaluation. This unique access allowed researchers to observe "brain ripples"—tiny, high-speed bursts of synchronized electrical activity—directly within healthy segments of the human brain for the first time.

These ripples represent a sophisticated communal firing of neurons that typically occurs during sleep or quiet rest, acting as a delivery system for packaging and storing memories. The study revealed that after just a few minutes of cycling, the frequency of these ripples increased significantly within the hippocampus and its connected networks. Furthermore, these pulses became more finely synchronized with the rest of the brain’s neural activity, suggesting that exercise essentially "tunes" the brain’s internal communication to be more efficient at consolidation.

The implications of these findings offer a powerful new perspective on public health and aging. If short bursts of activity can immediately alter the brain's electrical "currency," exercise could be reframed not just as a long-term fitness goal, but as a real-time tool for cognitive preservation. By strengthening the electrical dynamics of the memory centers, individuals may be able to build a more resilient brain that is better protected against the typical decline associated with getting older.

Beyond the specific benefits to memory, the broader neurological impact of a single workout remains profound. Even a solitary session of physical activity has been shown to sharpen mental focus for up to two hours afterward while simultaneously triggering a surge in dopamine, the body’s natural "feel-good" hormone. This combination of enhanced memory consolidation, increased concentration, and improved mood suggests that movement is perhaps the most accessible and effective "smart drug" available for the human mind.

20 minutes of cycling can make your brain fitter New Tab ↗
Researchers at the University of Iowa have provided a groundbreaking look at the immediate impact of physical activity on the human brain by monitoring 14 patients with medically intractable epilepsy. By utilizing intracranial electroencephalograp hy (iEEG)—a rare monitoring technique that records electrical signals directly from the brain—the team was able to observe "ripples," or fast electrical bursts, in the hippocampus. This study is particularly significant because it moves beyond indirect measurements, like blood flow or oxygen consumption, to capture millisecond-by-millisecond neural dynamics during and after exercise.

The experimental design required participants between the ages of 17 and 50 to engage in roughly 20 minutes of light to moderate cycling on a mini-bike, aiming for 50–60% of their maximum heart rate. On a standard exertion scale, participants rated the effort as moderately strenuous, achieving an average heart rate of approximately 57.7%. The researchers bookended this activity with periods of rest to establish a clear baseline, allowing them to precisely measure how the transition from stillness to movement altered the brain's internal signaling.

The primary finding of the research was a marked increase in the frequency of hippocampal ripples following the exercise session. These ripples are widely recognized by the scientific community as a critical mechanism for sorting, organizing, and replaying memories. The study revealed that even a single, short bout of low-intensity activity is sufficient to shift these hippocampal-cortical dynamics, suggesting that the brain enters a heightened state of memory processing and mental rehearsal almost immediately after the body begins to move.

A key discovery involved the "coupling" or synchronization between different brain networks. After cycling, the researchers observed stronger connectivity between the hippocampus and several other regions, including the limbic network and the default mode network—areas typically associated with inward thought and memory recall. This increased "phase-locking" indicates that different parts of the brain were communicating more effectively and precisely with one another, with the most dramatic improvements seen in the limbic system and the frontoparietal networks.

The study also highlighted a direct correlation between physical intensity and neurological response. Heart rate emerged as a significant predictor of the magnitude of change in ripple activity; essentially, the more the heart rate increased within the prescribed range, the more pronounced the changes in the default mode network became. This suggests that the "dose" of exercise—even at a moderate level—plays a vital role in determining how much the brain's memory-related circuits are stimulated.

By connecting direct intracranial evidence with previous findings from animal studies and human fMRI scans, this research solidifies the link between movement and cognitive enhancement. It provides a high-resolution biological explanation for why exercise is frequently associated with better memory and sharper focus. Ultimately, the study confirms that physical activity does not just benefit the body; it actively tunes the brain’s electrical architecture to better manage and retain information.

Vietnamese surgeon sets up IV line on Tokyo flight to save unconscious Japanese passenger New Tab ↗
A routine overnight flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Tokyo was transformed into a life-saving medical theater when Dr. Nguyen Hoang Duy Tien, a 32-year-old orthopedic surgeon from Can Tho Central General Hospital, answered an urgent mid-air appeal for a physician. Just thirty minutes prior to landing at Haneda Airport on April 5, the cabin atmosphere shifted from quiet anticipation to crisis as a Japanese woman lost consciousness. Despite having just finished his meal and preparing for sleep, Dr. Tien rushed to the front of the aircraft to find the patient pale and unresponsive on the floor. After a quick consultation with her family revealed no underlying health conditions, Dr. Tien used the onboard equipment to discover her blood pressure had plummeted to a life-threatening level of 70/40, a state that put her at immediate risk of cardiac arrest or permanent organ damage.

The environment for the subsequent intervention was far from ideal, characterized by the cramped confines of a descending airplane and the onset of light turbulence. Although Dr. Tien specializes in trauma and orthopedics rather than emergency internal medicine, he fell back on his foundational residency training to initiate a standard stabilization protocol. Setting up an intravenous line under the watchful eyes of anxious passengers and a multilingual crew proved a significant psychological challenge; it had been years since he had performed the procedure as a daily routine. Nevertheless, he successfully inserted the IV on his first attempt, administering a saline drip from the aircraft's emergency medical kit while switching his communication to English to ensure the diverse flight crew could assist him seamlessly.

The effectiveness of the surgeon's quick thinking became evident within ten minutes, as the patient’s blood pressure began a steady climb and she successfully regained consciousness. By the time the aircraft touched down at Haneda, the woman was able to speak and her vitals had stabilized significantly. Upon landing, the captain enforced a protocol requiring passengers to remain seated while a specialized ground medical team boarded the plane. Dr. Tien provided a comprehensive professional handover, briefing the Japanese emergency responders on the specific actions he had taken and the patient's physiological response before he continued on his journey to a prestigious advanced spine surgery program in Toyama.

Reflecting on the dramatic event, Dr. Tien described the encounter as a unique and unforgettable milestone in his medical career. While his professional path has taken him through rigorous training in Switzerland, Taiwan, and various regions of Japan, providing critical care at an altitude of 10,000 meters presented a set of variables no hospital setting could replicate. The incident highlighted the vital importance of universal medical training, as the surgeon's ability to act without hesitation—despite the pressure and the specialized nature of his usual work—ensured that a potentially fatal mid-flight emergency ended in a successful recovery rather than a tragedy.

Five vegetables to eat weekly for better liver health New Tab ↗
The liver serves as the body’s primary chemical processing plant, managing an astonishing array of more than 500 vital biological functions. These range from the synthesis of essential proteins and the storage of critical minerals to the constant filtration of the bloodstream and the production of bile. However, the modern prevalence of sedentary lifestyles and processed diets has placed an unprecedented strain on this organ, leading to a rise in liver-related ailments. To counter these risks, incorporating specific nutrient-dense vegetables can provide the liver with the biochemical support it needs to maintain its structural integrity and metabolic efficiency.

Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cabbage are particularly renowned for their potent detoxification properties. Broccoli is packed with vitamin C and sulforaphane, a compound that triggers the activation of liver enzymes specifically designed to neutralize and flush out environmental toxins. Research suggests that broccoli sprout extract can even help stabilize liver enzyme levels in individuals struggling with fatty liver disease. Similarly, cabbage provides a rich source of antioxidants that bolster the liver's natural defense mechanisms against oxidative damage. By making these greens a dietary staple, individuals can effectively enhance their body's internal cleansing processes while shielding liver cells from the inflammatory effects of oxidative stress.

Beyond the green varieties, vibrant vegetables like beets and artichokes offer unique restorative benefits for hepatic health. Beets contain high concentrations of betalain—the pigment responsible for their deep purple hue—which works alongside folate and manganese to improve metabolic rates and alleviate the symptoms of fatty liver. Meanwhile, artichokes act as a powerhouse for regeneration, containing silymarin and cynarin. These specific compounds are instrumental in repairing damaged liver tissue and stimulating bile production, which is essential for the effective digestion of fats and the elimination of waste. Together with the beta-carotene and vitamin E found in spinach, these vegetables form a comprehensive nutritional defense system that protects, repairs, and optimizes the body’s largest internal organ.

Con nuôi Đàm Vĩnh Hưng từng giành quán quân 'Tuyệt đỉnh song ca nhí' giờ ra sao? New Tab ↗
