Chinese quadriplegic runs farm with just one finger

In a prefabricated home in Shiping village, near Chongqing, 36-year-old Li Xia manages a sophisticated high-tech farm despite being quadriplegic and bedridden. Suffering from Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD)—a genetic degenerative condition that has left him reliant on a permanent ventilator—Li has engineered a way to operate four nearby greenhouses using only the movement of one finger and one toe.

Li’s operation utilizes a custom-designed computer program and mobile app that allow him to monitor critical agricultural data, including temperature, humidity, pH levels, and nutrient concentrations. Positioned beneath an adjustable computer monitor, he navigates an on-screen cursor with a trackball using his functional finger, while a flex sensor attached to his toe serves as his primary clicking mechanism. Through integrated cameras, he provides real-time oversight of mechanical operations like water pumps and ventilation fans.

The farm employs hydroponics, a soil-less cultivation method that uses nutrient-enriched water solutions to grow crops. Li taught himself programming and circuit board design to automate much of the process, choosing this method specifically because its reliance on digital precision rather than manual labor allowed him to merge his interest in technology with his agricultural roots.

The manual labor required for the farm is performed by Li’s 62-year-old mother, Wu Dimei. Li describes their partnership as a symbiotic relationship where he serves as the "brain" and she acts as the "arms and legs." Wu manages the physical installation of equipment, fertilizer measurement, and cable connections, all while providing intensive, around-the-clock medical care for her son. Despite the physical toll and limited sleep, Wu describes the family as happy and finds purpose in their shared endeavor.

Currently, the family’s celery is sold to a local supermarket chain, though they still rely heavily on Wu’s pension and the income of Li’s sister. Li views his high-tech farm as a high-prospect niche and hopes to expand the business to improve his family's financial stability. His journey echoes the resilience of other figures with severe neuromotor disorders who leveraged technology to maintain their agency and contribute to society.
