South Korea's Lee calls for safety, readiness against 'terror' acts at BTS concert

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has declared that security and safety must be the "top priority" for the upcoming BTS comeback concert scheduled for March 21 in central Seoul. During a cabinet meeting on March 17, the President emphasized the need for total readiness, specifically citing the potential for "acts of terror" given the massive scale of the event. The concert marks the group's first new album release in over three years and is expected to be one of the largest public gatherings in the capital since the 2002 World Cup.

The Ministry of the Interior and Safety estimates that the free event could draw up to 260,000 people to the heart of Seoul. While 22,000 fans hold official free tickets for designated areas, Interior Minister Yun Ho-jung confirmed that the surrounding spaces from Gwanghwamun Square to City Hall will remain open to the general public. This sprawling, one-hour performance will also be broadcast live on Netflix to 190 countries, placing a global spotlight on South Korea’s ability to manage large-scale crowd safety.

To manage the immense logistics of the day, authorities have announced a massive security deployment. Approximately 4,800 police officers and 3,400 municipal officials from the city of Seoul will be stationed across the district. Their primary responsibilities include directing the flow of the crowd, maintaining emergency response corridors, and implementing rigorous anti-terrorism protocols to protect both local attendees and international visitors.

The heightened scrutiny comes as BTS prepares to embark on a highly anticipated global tour in April. For the South Korean government, the March 21 concert serves as a critical test of public order and safety infrastructure. With hundreds of thousands expected to flood the city center, officials are working to ensure that the celebration of the group’s return remains secure and free of incidents.
