Indonesia landslide death toll rises to 44

The official death toll following a devastating landslide in the Indonesian village of Pasirlangu has risen to 44, according to statements released by authorities on Friday. The disaster, which occurred last Saturday southeast of Jakarta, was triggered by torrential rainfall that decimated dozens of residential structures and forced hundreds of local residents to flee their homes.

In response to the tragedy, a massive recovery operation involving thousands of personnel from the military, police, and volunteer groups has been underway. Mohammad Syafii, head of the national search and rescue agency, confirmed that while dozens of victims have been identified, at least 20 individuals remain unaccounted for. Consequently, the search and rescue window has been formally extended until February 6 to ensure a thorough recovery effort.

Search conditions remain perilous and difficult for the teams on the ground. Persistent light-to-moderate rainfall and heavy fog have significantly reduced visibility, hindering the use of both manual tools and heavy machinery. Among those caught in the initial surge of mud and debris were 23 naval troops who had been conducting training exercises in the region prior to a scheduled border deployment.

The impact on local infrastructure has been severe, with over 50 homes destroyed and approximately 650 people currently displaced. Regional leaders have pointed to land-use changes as a primary catalyst for the disaster. West Bandung authorities noted that the conversion of once-forested mountainsides into sprawling vegetable plantations has stripped the land of its natural stability, leaving the soil unable to absorb heavy rainfall or resist erosion.

This incident follows a catastrophic pattern of environmental instability in Indonesia. Last year, similar deforestation-linked disasters on Sumatra island resulted in approximately 1,200 fatalities and the displacement of nearly a quarter of a million people. The loss of root systems, which typically anchor the earth and manage water runoff, has left many parts of the archipelago increasingly vulnerable during the rainy season.

While landslides are a recurring threat across Indonesia between October and March, the scale of this recent event has intensified calls for stricter land management policies. The government continues to emphasize that the restoration of forest cover is essential to preventing future tragedies of this magnitude.
