Thailand strikes deal with Iran for oil tankers to pass through Strait of Hormuz

In a significant diplomatic breakthrough aimed at stabilizing its energy security, Thailand has reached a formal agreement with Iran to guarantee safe passage for Thai-flagged oil vessels through the volatile Strait of Hormuz. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced the deal on Saturday, noting that the arrangement is expected to alleviate severe fuel import disruptions that have plagued Southeast Asia since the Middle East conflict began on February 28.

The Strait of Hormuz, a chokepoint through which approximately 20% of the world's oil and gas flows, has seen shipping traffic plummet by 95% this month as Iranian forces restricted access to vessels linked to its "enemies." For Thailand, which relies heavily on these shipments, the blockade has already forced difficult economic concessions. The government recently had to lift a price cap on diesel, resulting in a sharp increase of 6 baht ($0.18) per liter this week.

The urgency of the agreement was underscored by recent violence in the waterway, including an attack earlier this month on a Thai bulk carrier that left three crew members missing. While Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow confirmed that Iran has located the vessel, the condition and whereabouts of the missing sailors remain unknown. This incident is part of a broader pattern of maritime insecurity, with the UKMTO reporting 24 commercial vessel attacks in the region throughout March.

By securing this "safe corridor," the Thai government hopes to prevent a recurrence of the supply shocks witnessed in early March and restore confidence in the national fuel supply chain. Prime Minister Anutin offered a public apology for the economic strain caused by rising energy costs, stating that the administration remains committed to adapting its measures as the "short-lived" hope for the conflict evolves.

While Thailand has secured this bilateral reprieve, the broader region remains on edge. With over 80% of the oil and LNG transiting the Strait destined for Asian markets, the success of the Thai-Iranian deal will be closely watched by neighboring nations still struggling with the fallout of the naval blockade and the ongoing war.
