Vietnam Party leader To Lam to visit Cambodia

In a significant move to solidify regional partnerships, General Secretary To Lam is set to lead a high-level Vietnamese delegation to Cambodia on February 6, 2026. The state visit, conducted at the invitation of King Norodom Sihamoni, underscores the deep-rooted diplomatic ties between the two nations, which have been officially established since 1967.

The visit is not merely ceremonial; it carries substantial geopolitical weight. General Secretary Lam will join Samdech Hun Sen, President of the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP), to co-chair a high-level meeting between the leadership of both ruling parties. Furthermore, a trilateral summit involving the party chiefs of Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos is scheduled to take place, aimed at synchronizing the development and security strategies of the three neighboring countries.

Economically, the relationship is reaching new heights. In 2025, bilateral trade surged to US$11.33 billion, a nearly 12% increase from the previous year. This growth cements Vietnam’s position as Cambodia’s third-largest trading partner globally and its most significant partner within the ASEAN bloc. Vietnam also remains a top-tier investor in the kingdom, with 229 active projects and a total registered capital of approximately US$2.94 billion.

Beyond commerce, the delegation's agenda is expected to touch on critical cooperation in defense, telecommunications, and transport. The two neighbors continue to align their stances within international frameworks like the United Nations and the Mekong sub-regional mechanisms, ensuring a unified voice on regional stability and resource management.
