Từ tháng 4 - 6.2020 khi đại dịch Covid-19 bắt đầu bùng phát, doanh số iPad đã tăng lên hằng quý. Trong quý tài chính thứ hai năm 2021 của Apple (từ tháng 1 - 3.2021), doanh số iPad tăng vọt 79% so với cùng kỳ năm ngoái.
Theo Digitimes, với việc iPad thế hệ thứ 9 giá rẻ hơn sắp ra mắt, Apple có thể xuất xưởng 60 triệu máy tính bảng trong năm 2021.

Hồi tháng 1.2021, thời điểm những thông tin ban đầu về iPad thế hệ thứ 9 xuất hiện, các báo cáo cho biết máy sẽ không mang đến nhiều thay đổi. Điều này bao gồm kích thước màn hình 10,2 inch vẫn giữ nguyên, cùng thiết kế tương tự như những gì Apple đã mang đến cho iPad Air 3 2019.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says the new iPad mini will have the biggest redesign in the model's history. It could come with the same design as the iPad Pro (2021) with thinner bezels and an aluminum back. The device also integrates a Touch ID fingerprint sensor into the power button.
