TikTok to invest $8.8B in Thailand over five years New Tab ↗

TikTok has announced plans to invest $8.8 billion in Thailand over the next five years, focusing on digital infrastructure, workforce development, and online safety. This move makes TikTok the latest tech giant to pour money into Thailand, following major investment commitments from Amazon, Google, and Microsoft.

Helena Lersch, TikTok’s vice president of public policy, met with Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra in Bangkok to discuss the expansion. At the meeting, Lersch publicly confirmed the investment, which the Thai government sees as a huge opportunity for advancing the country's digital infrastructure and AI sector.

The investment package includes several key initiatives. TikTok plans to launch training programs for businesses and content creators to help them maximize their presence on the platform. Additionally, the company will implement anti-fraud initiatives to improve online safety and protect users. Another major component of the investment is the development of a new data hosting service, which will enhance Thailand’s cloud computing capabilities and digital ecosystem.

It remains unclear whether this new commitment includes the $3.8 billion investment previously approved by Thailand’s Board of Investment in January. However, the scale of TikTok’s expansion suggests that the company is making a long-term bet on Thailand as a key player in the region's digital economy.

A Strategic Move Amid Global Challenges
TikTok’s decision to expand in Thailand comes as the platform faces a potential ban in the United States over security concerns related to user data. In January, TikTok temporarily disappeared from U.S. app stores, sparking outrage among its millions of users.

With uncertainty looming in the U.S. and growing regulatory scrutiny in Europe, TikTok appears to be diversifying its global operations and strengthening its presence in Southeast Asia. Thailand, in particular, has been actively attracting foreign tech investment to boost its digital transformation efforts.

Positioning Thailand as a Digital Hub
Thailand, Southeast Asia’s second-largest economy, has historically lagged behind Singapore and Indonesia in the tech sector. The government has been aggressively courting U.S. tech giants to close the gap with regional competitors.

Vietnam, for example, has been working to move up the value chain, transitioning from a hub for manufacturing shoes, furniture, and clothing to becoming a more advanced technology and innovation center. Thailand is now trying to take a similar path by encouraging major investments in cloud services, AI, and e-commerce platforms.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn highlighted the $8.8 billion data hosting project as a crucial step in transforming Thailand into a global digital industry hub. With over 50 million users in Thailand and three million businesses selling on TikTok Shop, the platform already has a strong presence in the country.

The new investment is expected to further solidify Thailand’s role in the region’s digital economy, helping it compete with neighboring countries and attract more tech-driven businesses in the coming years.

Skype to shut down in May after 2 decades New Tab ↗

Microsoft has officially announced that it will retire Skype on May 5, marking the end of a platform that revolutionized internet-based communication for over two decades. The decision is part of Microsoft’s broader strategy to consolidate its communication services and shift focus entirely to Teams, its enterprise collaboration tool.

Launched in 2003, Skype was a pioneer in internet calling, disrupting traditional landline services and becoming a widely recognized name worldwide. At its peak, the platform boasted hundreds of millions of users and was instrumental in shaping modern digital communication. However, it struggled to adapt to the smartphone era and faced stiff competition from newer, more streamlined platforms such as Zoom and Slack.

One of Skype’s major shortcomings was its technological foundation, which was not well-suited for mobile-first communication. This became increasingly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic when businesses and individuals turned to online video conferencing solutions. Instead of investing further in Skype, Microsoft chose to aggressively promote Teams, integrating it with its Office suite and targeting corporate users—many of whom had previously relied on Skype.

To ensure a smooth transition, Microsoft announced that existing Skype users would be able to log into Teams for free using their current credentials. Chats and contact lists will be migrated automatically, making it easier for users to switch platforms without disruption.

Skype's shutdown adds it to the list of Microsoft’s once-dominant but now-defunct products, such as Internet Explorer and the Windows Phone. Microsoft is not alone in facing challenges with communication tools—Google has also struggled over the years, experimenting with multiple messaging apps like Hangouts and Duo, only to discontinue them later.

Microsoft did not disclose how many users Skype still has today but confirmed that Teams currently boasts around 320 million monthly active users. The company assured that there would be no job cuts as a result of this transition.

Skype’s decline has been gradual. When Microsoft acquired the platform in 2011 for $8.5 billion, it had approximately 150 million monthly users. However, by 2020, that number had dwindled to around 23 million, despite a temporary resurgence in demand during the pandemic.

In its farewell message, Microsoft acknowledged Skype’s impact on global communication. "Skype has been an integral part of shaping modern communications. We are honored to have been part of the journey," the company stated.

Why Vietnam is no longer in the top global food destinations for 2025 New Tab ↗

Vietnam’s exclusion from Tripadvisor’s 2025 list of top food destinations has sparked discussions among industry experts and travelers alike, with many pointing to rising global competition, shifting travel trends, and evolving tourist preferences as possible reasons for the change.

Despite this, seasoned travelers like 39-year-old Gary Johnson, who has visited nearly 90 countries, argue that Vietnamese cuisine remains one of the country’s strongest attractions. "Whenever my friends visit Vietnam, the first thing they rave about is the food, followed by the scenery, affordability, and the warmth of the people," he said. Similarly, British tourist Susan Halliwell, 71, who recently visited Vietnam, expressed her love for dishes like bánh xèo (crispy pancakes) and trứng vịt lộn (boiled duck egg embryos), despite initial hesitation about street food. Both were surprised that Vietnam was absent from this year’s rankings, given the country’s reputation for exceptional cuisine.

Vietnam’s culinary standing has fluctuated in Tripadvisor’s rankings. Hanoi previously held the top spot in 2024 and ranked third in 2023, but failed to make the 2025 list. Tripadvisor’s Travelers’ Choice Best of the Best awards recognize less than 1% of destinations worldwide based on traveler reviews, making the rankings highly competitive.

Experts believe that other destinations may have overtaken Vietnam by innovating and refining their food experiences. Ho Dac Thieu Anh, a well-known culinary expert, suggested that as global food trends evolve, new destinations may be gaining recognition. Martin Koener, Commercial Director at Anam Group, echoed this view, noting that competition is intensifying as cities worldwide enhance their culinary offerings to attract international attention.

Another factor could be the shifting demographics of Tripadvisor users, whose reviews significantly influence rankings. Koener pointed out that Vietnam must continuously evolve to maintain its reputation. Remi Van Peteghem, Executive Chef at Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi, emphasized that international visitors may not have full access to the breadth of Vietnamese cuisine, which could have impacted Hanoi’s ranking.

However, Hanoi’s exclusion is not unique. Other previously top-ranked food destinations also disappeared from the 2025 list, including Crete, which placed third in 2024 and second in 2023, and Florence. This suggests that rankings are fluid and subject to frequent changes.

Some travelers, like 72-year-old British visitor Nigel Halliwell, argue that rankings do not always reflect reality. "Taste is subjective. Neither Michelin stars nor Tripadvisor rankings can capture every traveler’s preferences," he said. Thieu Anh agreed, stating that Hanoi’s food continues to be celebrated for its rich heritage and traditional flavors.

Despite the ranking shift, experts still regard Vietnam as an exciting culinary destination. To regain global recognition, they suggest fostering collaborations with international chefs, participating in global food festivals, and expanding Vietnam’s presence in Michelin Guide listings. Enhancing food tours, street food experiences, and cooking classes could also boost Vietnam’s appeal to culinary travelers.

Maintaining food quality and sustainability is another crucial factor. Experts stress that improving food hygiene, ensuring sustainable ingredient sourcing, and tackling tourist scams will enhance Vietnam’s reputation. Van Peteghem noted that Vietnam’s street food is just as diverse and high-quality as Bangkok’s, yet it lacks strong branding on the global stage. He called for a more aggressive promotional strategy to highlight the country’s culinary strengths.

Additionally, Vietnam must address issues like overpricing and scams targeting foreign tourists. Nguyen Ba Thien An, 24, recounted witnessing a street vendor charging a tourist VND200,000 ($7.80) for a small bag of apples, warning that such incidents could harm Vietnam’s culinary reputation.

Despite the exclusion from the rankings, Vietnam’s tourism industry remains strong. International arrivals in early 2025 nearly reached pre-pandemic levels, with a record 2.1 million foreign visitors in January alone. Many industry leaders argue that rankings, while useful for marketing, are ultimately less important than actual tourist numbers and spending. "What truly matters is how many visitors we attract and how much they invest in our economy, not just whether we appear on a list," said Nguyen Van My, Chairman of Lua Viet Tours.

Trump, Zelensky row in Oval Office after dispute on compromise with Russia New Tab ↗

A recent meeting in the Oval Office between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy took a dramatic turn when discussions became tense and confrontational. Initially, the leaders had gathered to finalize an agreement granting the United States access to Ukraine’s rare-earth minerals and other critical natural resources. However, the conversation soon shifted to Ukraine’s ongoing war with Russia, leading to a heated exchange between the two leaders.

During the meeting, Trump criticized Zelenskyy, accusing him of not showing enough gratitude for U.S. military aid and failing to approach negotiations with Russia in a way that would lead to a peace deal. He insisted that Ukraine would have to make "compromises" in order to end the conflict and suggested that a truce was within reach. Zelenskyy, on the other hand, pushed back, arguing that there could be no compromises with Russia, which he accused of war crimes and atrocities against Ukrainian civilians. He pointed to Russia’s deportation of Ukrainian children and other alleged violations of international law as reasons why Ukraine could not simply agree to a negotiated settlement.

Trump, visibly frustrated, told Zelenskyy that he was "gambling with the lives of millions of people" and risking a broader global conflict. He accused the Ukrainian leader of being "disrespectful" and suggested that Ukraine was in no position to dictate terms to the United States. Vice President JD Vance, who was present at the meeting, echoed Trump’s sentiment, also criticizing Zelenskyy’s attitude.

The breakdown in the conversation marked a significant shift in U.S.-Ukraine relations, raising concerns among Western allies about the future of American support for Kyiv. European leaders quickly reaffirmed their backing for Ukraine in response to the tense meeting, while Russian officials welcomed the apparent rift between the U.S. and Ukraine. The meeting also confirmed Trump’s evolving stance on the war, as he has increasingly distanced himself from the strong pro-Ukraine position that had been the official U.S. policy under his predecessor.

Despite the tension, Zelenskyy extended an invitation for Trump to visit Ukraine in person to witness the realities of the war firsthand. However, Trump did not immediately respond to the proposal. The meeting’s outcome left many questioning whether the U.S. would maintain its role as a key supporter of Ukraine or whether the new administration would push for a peace deal on terms more favorable to Russia.

Thousands flee after Japan's biggest wildfire in decades New Tab ↗

Japan is grappling with its largest wildfire in three decades, which continues to rage uncontrolled in the northern city of Ofunato, forcing the evacuation of thousands and leaving at least one person dead.

Mass Evacuations as Fire Spreads
Local officials report that around 2,000 residents have fled to stay with friends or relatives, while over 1,200 have sought refuge in emergency shelters.

A disaster management agency spokesperson confirmed that this is Japan’s worst wildfire since 1992, when a massive blaze swept through Kushiro, Hokkaido. Some estimates suggest the fire has already scorched more than 1,800 hectares of land.

Firefighting Efforts Underway
Aerial footage broadcast by NHK shows thick white smoke billowing as military helicopters attempt to contain the inferno. Over 1,700 firefighters from across Japan have been mobilized, battling the flames for four consecutive days. So far, more than 80 buildings have been damaged.

Japan’s Wildfire Trends
Although the number of wildfires in Japan has declined since the 1970s, government data shows that in 2023 alone, there were approximately 1,300 wildfires nationwide. These incidents are most common between February and April, when dry air and strong winds create ideal conditions for fires to spread rapidly.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, as efforts to control the devastating blaze remain ongoing.

Another stupid fake news from stupid people : DOGE Halted $2.6 Million Annual Payment To Obama For 'Obamacare Royalties' New Tab ↗

Attachment 2496528

Did DOGE halt a $2.6 million annual payment to former President Obama for "Obamacare" royalties? No, that's not true .

by: Maarten Schenk

The story originated in a meme from a satirical Facebook page. The owner of the page is known for tricking conservatives into liking and sharing made-up content.

The meme appeared in a Facebook post published on February 25, 2025. The text accompanying the meme read:

He's been charging the taxpayer for using his name, even though the actual name of Obamacare is "The Affordable Care Act."

The text in the meme itself read:

DOGE stopped an annual payment to Barack Obama for $2.6 million for "royalties associated with Obamacare".

He's been collecting it since 2010, for a total of $39 million taxpayer dollars.

This is what the post looked like on Facebook at the time of writing:

The image even included a satire disclaimer that said, "Nothing on the page is real":

The first comment below the Facebook post linked to an article on "The Dunning-Kruger Times" titled "DOGE Halts $2.6 Million Annual Payment to Obama for "Obamacare" Royalties", which opened:

Washington, D.C. - In a shocking display of fiscal responsibility, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has uncovered and stopped a $2.6 million annual payment to former President Barack Obama--a fee he was allegedly receiving as royalties for the government using his name in "Obamacare."

According to investigators, a little-known clause buried deep in the Affordable Care Act's legal fine print entitled Obama to a small percentage of every time someone referred to the program by its popular nickname.

The Dunning-Kruger Times website features an "About Us" page that has the following disclaimer:

Dunning-Kruger-Times.com is a subsidiary of the 'America's Last Line of Defense' network of parody, satire, and tomfoolery, or as Snopes called it before they lost their war on satire: Junk News

The Facebook page where the claim originated had a description that read:

According to the page transparency tab of the page, it was run by "Busta Troll," which is the nickname of Christopher Blair.

Christopher Blair is a self-professed liberal from Maine who, for years, has run networks of websites set up to troll conservatives with made-up news items in order to get them to share his posts. A 2018 BBC profile called Blair "the Godfather of fake news," describing him as "one of the world's most prolific writers of disinformation."

His websites usually have multiple satire disclaimers, and the stories very often contain obvious hints they are not real, like category names indicating they are fiction, links to "sources" that instead go to funny or offensive images, or an "S for Satire" logo added to the images used as illustrations. Another telltale sign is the name "Art Tubolls" (anagram for "Busta Troll") for characters in the stories. Blair also frequently pays homage to two of his friends who passed away by using their names ("Joe Barron" and "Sandy Batt") in stories.

Blair's stories have been widely copied by spammy, foreign website networks trying to make a buck by spamming American conservatives with clickbait headlines.

Here you can find some of the many, many stories from Blair's websites Lead Stories debunked over the years, including one from 2017 that also mentions "Obamacare royalties."

How to drink coffee for detoxification? New Tab ↗

Incorporating healthy fats like coconut oil or grass-fed butter into your coffee can boost its detoxifying effects, supporting liver function and metabolism.
Coffee is packed with antioxidants, especially chlorogenic acid, which helps neutralize harmful free radicals, according to the Times of India. It also serves as a natural diuretic, supporting kidney function and aiding in the elimination of toxins through urine. To fully reap these detox benefits, it’s essential to know the best way to enjoy your coffee.

Choosing the right beans

The foundation of a detoxifying cup of coffee begins with selecting the right beans. Opt for organic, pesticide-free coffee to avoid ingesting unwanted toxins, as conventional coffee is often treated with chemicals that may negate its detoxifying benefits.

Also, avoid adding excessive sugar, artificial sweeteners, or syrups, as they can counteract the detox effects. Instead, enjoy your coffee black or naturally enhance its flavor with cinnamon or pure cocoa, which add taste without harmful additives.

Adding healthy fats

For an extra detox boost, consider adding healthy fats to your coffee. Ingredients like coconut oil, MCT oil, or grass-fed butter—often used in "bulletproof coffee"—can enhance metabolism and liver function. These fats provide sustained energy without spiking insulin levels, supporting the detox process.

Selecting the right brewing method

When brewing coffee, methods such as French press, pour-over, or espresso help preserve its beneficial antioxidants. In contrast, instant coffee or heavily processed varieties may contain chemicals that could diminish its detoxifying effects.

Pairing with the right foods

To maximize coffee’s detox benefits, pair it with an anti-inflammatory diet. Focus on whole foods, vegetables, and lean proteins while avoiding processed foods and excess sugar. This will ease the burden on your liver and enhance the detoxification process.

Maintaining hydration

Since coffee acts as a natural diuretic, it can cause dehydration if not balanced with adequate hydration. To support kidney function and aid detoxification, drink a glass of water before and after your coffee. This simple step helps maintain hydration and prevents dehydration-related issues.

Drinking at the optimal time

Timing is crucial for maximizing coffee’s detoxifying effects. The best time to drink coffee is between 9:30 and 11:30 a.m., when cortisol levels are naturally stable. Avoid drinking coffee first thing in the morning or late at night, as it may cause caffeine-induced stress and interfere with sleep.

For those looking to enhance their detox process, drinking black coffee before exercise can provide additional benefits. The metabolic boost and improved fat oxidation during physical activity help the body flush out toxins more effectively.

Limiting frequency

While coffee has numerous health benefits, overconsumption can lead to adrenal fatigue, digestive issues, and increased stress. To enjoy its detox benefits without adverse effects, limit your intake to one or two cups per day.

According to WebMD, research suggests that moderate coffee consumption may help slow the progression of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Eva Air to ban portable chargers on all flights New Tab ↗

Taiwanese airline EVA Air has announced that it will prohibit the use of portable chargers on all flights starting March 1, citing concerns over in-flight safety.

New Regulations for Portable Chargers
Currently, passengers are allowed to carry power banks and lithium batteries in their carry-on luggage, but they are strictly prohibited in checked baggage. However, under the new policy, passengers will no longer be able to use portable chargers during the flight.

To minimize inconvenience, EVA Air advises passengers to fully charge their electronic devices before boarding and to use the built-in charging outlets available at their seats if necessary, according to Taipei Times.

Following Global Aviation Safety Measures
The move follows similar aviation safety measures worldwide, particularly in South Korea, where authorities banned power banks on flights operated by domestic carriers starting February 13.

The decision came after a fire incident on an Air Busan flight in January, though the exact cause of the blaze remains unclear. As an additional precaution, on February 4, Air Busan also banned passengers from placing power banks and e-cigarettes in overhead bins, according to Korea Herald.

Other Airlines with Similar Policies
Taiwan’s Starlux Airlines has already enforced a ban on portable charger usage since its launch in 2018, instead encouraging passengers to rely on seat-side charging ports.

With aviation authorities tightening safety regulations, more airlines may follow suit in restricting power bank usage in-flight to reduce fire hazards.

Australian passengers criticize Qatar Airways for sitting with corpse on long-haul flight New Tab ↗

An Australian couple has expressed their shock and frustration after Qatar Airways placed a blanket-covered corpse next to them during a 14-hour flight from Melbourne to Doha last week.

Mitchell Ring, one of the passengers, recounted that the passenger passed away mid-flight, and the crew initially attempted to move the body to business class. However, due to the size of the deceased, they struggled to fit her through the aisle.

"They looked a bit frustrated, then they just looked at me and saw seats were available beside me," Ring told Nine News Australia.

Uncomfortable and Distressing Experience
Despite other empty seats being available, Ring and his wife, Jennifer Colin, were required to remain next to the body for approximately four hours, even after landing.

"The ambulance officers and the police came in, and the ambulance officers started pulling the blankets off the lady," Ring said. "It wasn’t nice."

Colin, who already finds flying difficult, described the situation as disturbing and stressful.

"I’m not a great flier at the best of times," she said. "There has to be a protocol that looks after the customers on board."

Ring further added that when the flight crew asked him to move over to make space for the deceased, he complied without hesitation, but questioned why other empty seats were not used instead.

Qatar Airways Responds
In response to the incident, Qatar Airways issued a statement apologizing for any inconvenience or distress caused.

"First and foremost, our thoughts are with the family of the passenger who sadly passed away on board our flight," the airline stated.

While airlines generally follow strict procedures when handling in-flight medical emergencies and deaths, this particular situation has sparked debate over passenger welfare and protocols in such cases.

Vietnamese citizens among 7,000 rescued from Myanmar scam networks New Tab ↗

Myanmar authorities have detained multiple foreign nationals, including Vietnamese citizens, as part of an ongoing crackdown on online scam operations along the Thailand-Myanmar border, according to Pham Thu Hang, spokesperson for Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

At a press conference on Thursday, Hang confirmed that Vietnam is still verifying the exact number of its nationals affected. The government is actively working with the Ministry of Public Security and has instructed Vietnam’s diplomatic missions in both Thailand and Myanmar to coordinate with local authorities. Their main goal is to identify rescued individuals and implement the necessary citizen protection measures.

Vietnam’s Commitment to Combating Cross-Border Crime
When asked about Vietnam’s broader efforts to combat online scam networks operating along its borders, Hang stated that Vietnamese authorities have been collaborating with neighboring countries to investigate and prosecute Vietnamese citizens involved in such illegal activities. These actions are being carried out in accordance with the laws of both Vietnam and the host countries.

"We believe that all legal violations must be dealt with in line with the law," Hang emphasized. She assured that Vietnamese authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will continue to ensure necessary and timely consular protection for Vietnamese citizens who have been victimized by these criminal networks.

The crackdown comes amid increasing efforts by Myanmar, Thailand, and China to dismantle scam compounds along the border region. These operations, which have exploited tens of thousands of foreign workers, are linked to investment scams, online fraud, and forced labor.

8 killed in Philippines as flames gut residential building in less than an hour New Tab ↗

A devastating fire tore through a three-story residential building in the Philippines' capital region early Thursday, claiming the lives of eight people and leaving at least one resident injured, according to local officials. The blaze, which ignited shortly after midnight, rapidly consumed the mostly wooden structure in San Isidro Galas village, Quezon City, while many occupants were asleep.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine what sparked the fire, which was extinguished in less than an hour but had already inflicted significant damage.

Deadly Toll and Survivors' Accounts
According to senior fire officer Rolando Valeña, witness testimonies suggest that the fire originated on the second floor, where six of the victims were later found. The bodies of two more victims were discovered on the ground floor.

Among the survivors, 33-year-old Beverly Salvador recounted a harrowing escape. She, along with her husband and two children, managed to crawl out of a small bathroom window on the third floor as flames and thick smoke spread rapidly below them. The family made their way onto the roof of a neighboring house, narrowly avoiding the same fate as their neighbors.

"I opened our door and saw that the corridor and the stairway going down were already in flames," Salvador told The Associated Press, explaining how she urged her husband to find another way out. The mother of two broke down in tears upon learning that two families—whom she had considered longtime friends—had perished on the second floor.

Fire Safety Concerns and Past Tragedies
The tragedy unfolded just days before the Philippines begins its annual Fire Prevention Month in March, a government-led campaign aimed at raising awareness about fire hazards ahead of the country’s scorching summer season.

Fatal fires are a recurring issue in the Philippines, often attributed to weak enforcement of fire safety regulations, overcrowding, and poor building designs. This latest incident has reignited concerns over the country's fire prevention measures and the vulnerability of residential structures, especially in urban areas.

One of the deadliest fires in Philippine history occurred in 1996, when a blaze engulfed a crowded disco club in Quezon City, killing 162 people—most of them students celebrating the end of the school year. Many victims were trapped inside because an emergency exit had been blocked by a newly constructed building next door.

As authorities continue to investigate the San Isidro Galas fire, officials and safety advocates are once again emphasizing the need for stricter fire regulations to prevent future tragedies.

Southeast Asia's latest scam center crackdown, explained New Tab ↗

China, Thailand, and Myanmar have recently intensified their joint efforts to dismantle cyber scam operations along the Thai-Myanmar border, with a particular focus on rescuing foreign workers who have been coerced into participating in fraudulent schemes. This crackdown, while not the first of its kind, comes at a critical moment and has significant implications for the three nations involved.

Why is the crackdown happening now?
Cyber scam operations—large-scale online fraud centers specializing in investment scams, romance scams, and other illicit activities—have plagued Southeast Asia for years. These criminal enterprises initially emerged from casinos in the Golden Triangle, a region straddling the borders of Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos, known for its history of illegal activities.

The situation worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic when many physical casinos were forced to shut down. As a result, operators shifted their focus to online fraud, developing increasingly sophisticated and highly profitable scams. Analysts estimate that the cyber scam industry is now worth billions of dollars.

In 2022, authorities cracked down on cyber scam centers in Cambodia’s Sihanoukville, a port city notorious for organized crime. However, this action only led to the relocation of these illicit operations to Myanmar’s border regions, particularly areas near China. A major rebel offensive in late 2023 eventually forced another wave of relocation, driving these scam centers deeper into Myanmar’s lawless territories.

Myanmar, which has been embroiled in a civil war since a military coup in 2021, has become a safe haven for these criminal networks. Operating with little interference from authorities, these scam centers lure workers—often young men—with promises of lucrative job opportunities. Once inside, victims are forced to conduct fraudulent activities targeting individuals worldwide. Those who refuse or fail to meet their quotas often face brutal punishments, including physical abuse.

The United Nations estimates that up to 120,000 people, many of them Chinese nationals, may currently be trapped inside Myanmar’s scam compounds.

Public outrage over these operations intensified in January 2025 when reports surfaced that Wang Xing, a relatively unknown Chinese actor, had allegedly been trafficked into one such compound near the Thai-Myanmar border. The case sparked widespread discussion on Chinese social media, with many netizens warning against traveling to Thailand, which they perceived as "dangerous."

In response to mounting pressure, Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra traveled to Beijing in early February to discuss solutions. One of the immediate measures taken by Thailand was cutting off cross-border electricity supplies to five regions in Myanmar suspected of harboring scam centers.

The crackdown gained further momentum when China’s public security minister visited the border town of Mae Sot—a key transit point between Thailand and Myanmar—two weeks later. This visit resulted in the repatriation of approximately 600 Chinese nationals believed to have been working in scam compounds, with Thailand facilitating their return.

Will this crackdown be effective?
Despite the recent high-profile efforts, experts remain skeptical about whether this crackdown will lead to lasting change. While Myanmar’s border militias are now overseeing thousands of newly released individuals, history suggests that such efforts have only temporary success.

Past crackdowns on cyber scam operations have largely resulted in relocation rather than elimination. Jason Greening, a security analyst, predicts that many scam centers will simply move to new locations, allowing their operations to continue largely undisturbed. He also warns that while a few low-level criminals may be arrested to create the appearance of enforcement, the true masterminds behind these operations are unlikely to be caught.

To further disrupt the scam networks, Thailand has intensified its efforts by cutting off internet access, electricity, and fuel supplies to areas in Myanmar believed to house cyber fraud centers. While this move may cause immediate disruptions, Sam Tower, a researcher specializing in Southeast Asian crime networks, argues that these criminal groups are highly adaptable. He believes that even with increased enforcement, scam centers will likely find alternative sources of power and internet connectivity, allowing them to resume operations elsewhere.

Broader Implications
The crackdown underscores the complex geopolitical and security challenges facing China, Thailand, and Myanmar. While China is eager to protect its citizens from falling victim to these scams, Thailand must navigate delicate diplomatic relations with both China and Myanmar. Meanwhile, Myanmar’s weak governance and ongoing internal conflict continue to provide a safe haven for organized crime.

For the crackdown to be truly effective, all three countries will need to maintain sustained cooperation, strengthen enforcement efforts, and target the financial networks that sustain these criminal enterprises. Without long-term commitment, experts warn that cyber scam operations will continue to evolve, shifting to new locations and methods to evade authorities.

India, Britain step up trade talks amid Trump tariff threats New Tab ↗

India and the United Kingdom have set an ambitious goal of more than doubling their bilateral trade within the next ten years, Indian Trade Minister Piyush Goyal announced on Monday. The statement came as the two nations resumed trade negotiations, even as concerns loomed over potential tariff increases imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Britain’s Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds, Goyal emphasized that both countries were committed to accelerating discussions on a proposed trade agreement. The negotiations would cover a free trade pact and an investment treaty, which are expected to strengthen economic ties between the two nations.

However, when asked whether their discussions had been affected by Trump’s recent directives to increase tariffs and introduce countermeasures against perceived trade barriers to American products, the ministers chose not to provide a direct response.

A joint statement released by India and the UK indicated that the decision to resume trade talks stemmed from a meeting between their respective prime ministers on the sidelines of the G20 summit in November. That gathering took place just weeks before Trump was sworn in for his second term as U.S. president.

Goyal described the prospective trade deal as “path-breaking” and stated that it had the potential to increase merchandise trade between India and the UK by two to three times within the next decade. However, he did not specify an exact timeline for the completion of negotiations or the implementation of the agreement.

According to estimates from the British government, the total value of trade in goods and services between India and the UK reached approximately £41 billion ($52 billion) in the 12 months leading up to September 2024. The two nations, currently ranked as the world’s fifth- and sixth-largest economies, respectively, are looking to build upon this figure through expanded economic cooperation.

Trade discussions had previously been put on hold in March 2024 due to upcoming elections in both countries. Now, with new leadership in place, both sides appear eager to revive and finalize the long-awaited agreement.

India has made notable progress in trade diplomacy in recent years, having signed agreements with several key partners. In 2022, it reached trade deals with the United Arab Emirates and Australia, and in 2023, it signed an agreement with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), which includes Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein.

Meanwhile, earlier this month, India made a significant tariff reduction on bourbon whisky, lowering the import duty from 150% to 100%. The decision came after Trump publicly criticized what he described as “unfair” tariffs imposed on American products in the Indian market.

As trade negotiations between India and the UK move forward, the potential impact of U.S. trade policies remains an important factor to watch. The evolving geopolitical landscape could influence the final terms of the agreement, as both nations seek to balance their economic relationships with multiple global partners.

US, Ukraine agree to terms of critical minerals deal New Tab ↗

The United States and Ukraine have successfully negotiated the terms of a draft agreement centered around Ukraine’s mineral resources, a development that is seen as crucial to securing Washington’s continued support as President Donald Trump pushes for a rapid resolution to the ongoing war with Russia, according to two sources with direct knowledge of the matter.

One of the sources indicated that discussions between Washington and Kyiv regarding future military aid and weapons shipments were still ongoing, suggesting that additional elements of the U.S.-Ukraine partnership remained unsettled.

Trump, when addressing reporters, mentioned that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was expected to visit Washington on Friday to sign what he described as a "very big deal." Sources familiar with the negotiations confirmed that both parties had already reviewed and agreed upon the draft terms of the agreement, and they recommended that it be finalized through formal signing.

This deal has the potential to grant the United States access to Ukraine’s vast and strategically important mineral resources, which include a range of materials essential for various industries. Trump framed the agreement as a means of ensuring that American financial contributions to Ukraine would be compensated. "What we're doing now is making sure we are secured," Trump stated. "The American taxpayer is going to get their money back, plus."

An earlier version of the agreement was rejected by Ukraine, as Washington had initially sought rights to an estimated $500 billion worth of Ukraine’s natural resources. Kyiv had objected, arguing that the country had received significantly less than that in U.S. financial aid, and that the previous proposal did not include the security guarantees necessary to protect Ukraine’s interests.

Under the newly negotiated draft terms, the deal would establish a Reconstruction Investment Fund, which would collect and reinvest revenues generated from Ukraine’s natural resource sectors, including minerals, hydrocarbons, and other extractable materials. Ukraine would be responsible for contributing 50% of the revenue—after deducting operational costs—until the total contribution reached $500 billion. In return, the United States would provide long-term financial commitments aimed at fostering a stable and economically prosperous Ukraine.

When asked what Ukraine would receive in exchange for its mineral wealth, Trump emphasized that the U.S. had already provided approximately $350 billion in aid, along with substantial military equipment, which allowed Ukraine to continue its fight against Russian forces.

Ukraine is home to deposits of 22 out of the 34 minerals classified by the European Union as critical for industrial and technological development. These include essential materials used in industrial applications, construction, metallurgy, and rare earth elements. One particularly notable resource is graphite, which is a crucial component in electric vehicle batteries and nuclear reactors. Ukraine’s reserves of graphite are estimated to account for 20% of the total global supply, making them a highly valuable strategic asset.

The finalization of this minerals agreement could significantly reshape U.S.-Ukraine relations, particularly as Kyiv navigates its post-war reconstruction and economic stabilization efforts. However, it also raises questions about whether Ukraine is receiving adequate compensation for its resources and whether the deal sufficiently addresses its security concerns.

Chinese tour guide jailed for theft on Jeju-Singapore flight New Tab ↗

A 30-year-old Chinese tour guide was sentenced to eight months in prison on Tuesday after being convicted of theft aboard a Scoot flight from Jeju to Singapore.

According to Channel News Asia, Zhang pleaded guilty to a single count of theft in the State Courts. The incident occurred on February 4 when he stole cash from a Gucci haversack stored in the overhead compartment.

Zhang first took notice of the bag when its owner, a 42-year-old woman traveling with her husband, retrieved her credit card to purchase food. Seizing the opportunity, he later took the bag to his seat, where he found a pouch containing cash in U.S. dollars and Chinese yuan. He then stole a portion of the money before returning the bag to the overhead compartment, The Straits Times reported.

However, the victim witnessed Zhang handling her bag and immediately confronted him. In response, he falsely claimed that he had been searching for his own belongings. Suspicious, the woman checked her pouch and discovered that some cash was missing. She and her husband confronted Zhang again, but he continued to deny any wrongdoing.

Two fellow passengers later reported seeing Zhang with the bag, prompting further investigation. Upon arrival in Singapore, cabin crew members discovered $885 in cash hidden in a different overhead compartment.

Faced with mounting evidence, Zhang eventually confessed, admitting that he had stolen the money to repay debts in China.

Gold posts modest gain as global rates hit new peak New Tab ↗

On Tuesday morning, gold bar prices in Vietnam experienced a slight increase, while global bullion prices surged to an all-time high.

The Saigon Jewelry Company (SJC) adjusted its gold bar price upward by 0.32%, bringing it to VND92.3 million ($3,622.45) per tael. Similarly, gold ring prices saw a 0.33% rise, reaching VND92.1 million per tael. In Vietnam, a tael is equivalent to 37.5 grams or 1.2 ounces.

On the international market, gold prices continued their upward trajectory, hitting a new record on Monday. The increase was largely fueled by investor demand for safe-haven assets amid rising concerns over U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff policies. Additionally, increased inflows into gold-backed exchange-traded funds (ETFs) provided further support to the metal’s value, according to Reuters.

Spot gold climbed 0.4% to $2,947.48 per ounce, after briefly reaching a session high of $2,956.15—marking its eleventh record high in 2025. Meanwhile, U.S. gold futures settled 0.3% higher at $2,963.20.

Market analysts predict that gold prices will continue to rise in the coming months. Jim Wyckoff, a senior analyst at Kitco Metals, stated that "investors believe gold will continue to appreciate over the weeks and months ahead." He emphasized that the "path of least resistance for gold remains sideways to higher," and as long as uncertainty lingers, the metal’s value is likely to keep climbing.

Vietnam police bust $78.5M cross-border money-laundering ring New Tab ↗

Vietnamese authorities announced on Monday the arrest of 21 individuals suspected of participating in a large-scale money-laundering operation that funneled approximately $78.5 million in illicit funds between Vietnam and Cambodia.

According to police in Dong Nai Province, the suspects—who are all Vietnamese and originate from southern Dong Nai and several northern provinces—were apprehended in mid-February. Investigators identified a female ringleader at the center of the operation, which had been in operation since July 2024.

The group was accused of transferring vast sums of money—equivalent to VND2 trillion ($78.5 million)—to finance gambling and online fraud for a transnational criminal organization based in Cambodia. Authorities reported that the gang had established around 30 shell companies and opened 150 business bank accounts to facilitate the transfer and laundering of illicit funds.

This case marks the latest in a series of major financial crime crackdowns in Vietnam. In January, law enforcement officials dismantled another cross-border money-laundering syndicate valued at $1.2 billion, resulting in five arrests.

Additionally, in October, Vietnamese real estate tycoon Truong My Lan was sentenced to life in prison for money laundering. She had previously been handed the death penalty for her role in a staggering $27 billion fraud scheme, though she is currently appealing the verdict.

6 vegetables and fruits that boost eye health New Tab ↗

A variety of fruits, vegetables, and herbs—such as ginkgo, blueberries, mulberries, fennel, goji berries, and chamomile—offer significant benefits for eye health. These natural ingredients are rich in antioxidants, anti-inflammatory compounds, and essential vitamins, which help protect the eyes, slow the aging process, and enhance vision.

Dr. Tran Thi Tra Phuong, a nutrition expert from Tam Anh General Hospital in Hanoi, highlights the importance of incorporating these foods into one's diet to maintain good eye health. She emphasizes that regularly consuming these nutrient-dense plants can help prevent and manage common eye conditions.

Six Vision-Enhancing Foods
Ginkgo
Ginkgo is known for its ability to improve blood circulation, particularly to the retina. This makes it beneficial for individuals suffering from glaucoma, a condition that affects the optic nerve. Additionally, ginkgo contains powerful antioxidants that shield nerve cells from oxidative stress caused by free radicals. A lack of these protective compounds can increase the risk of eye diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.

Blueberries
Rich in flavonoid antioxidants, blueberries play a crucial role in protecting eye cells from free radical damage. They also support healthy blood flow to the retina, enhancing night vision and reducing the risk of glaucoma and cataracts. Furthermore, blueberry extract is known to prevent the formation of abnormal blood vessels, a key factor in conditions like diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration.

Fennel
Fennel is particularly effective in reducing eye inflammation and excessive tearing. It is commonly used in the form of fennel tea as an eye rinse to alleviate discomfort caused by serious conditions such as cataracts and glaucoma. Studies have also shown that fennel seed oil can lower intraocular pressure, making it beneficial for those with glaucoma.

Mulberries
Mulberries are packed with flavonoid antioxidants that help prevent age-related eye diseases. The high vitamin C content in mulberries may lower the risk of cataracts, while the presence of zeaxanthin—a powerful carotenoid—acts as an antioxidant to protect the retina from damage.

Goji Berries
Loaded with lutein, zeaxanthin, and beta-carotene, goji berries play a vital role in filtering harmful blue light, reducing oxidative stress, and preventing age-related macular degeneration. These berries are also an excellent source of vitamins A and C, along with essential amino acids that help maintain eye hydration and relieve dry eye symptoms.

Chamomile
Chamomile is well known for its ability to improve vision and treat common eye issues such as blurred vision and dryness. Drinking chamomile tea can help reduce eye strain, which is especially beneficial for individuals who spend long hours in front of screens. Additionally, chamomile has anti-inflammatory properties that help relieve redness, swelling, and irritation.

Importance of Eye Care and Regular Check-ups
Dr. Phuong warns that many eye diseases develop slowly, often without noticeable symptoms until they reach an advanced stage. To prevent serious complications, she recommends regular eye check-ups to detect potential problems early.

She also suggests supplementing one’s diet with natural extracts such as broccophane, a compound derived from broccoli. Broccophane enhances thioredoxin production, a protein with strong antioxidant properties. This protein plays a critical role in protecting retinal pigment epithelial cells and the eye’s lens, contributing to clearer and healthier vision.

By incorporating these nutrient-rich foods and maintaining regular eye examinations, individuals can take proactive steps to preserve their vision and reduce the risk of common eye disorders.

HCMC people eating too much salt: CDC New Tab ↗

Residents of Ho Chi Minh City are consuming an average of 8.5 grams of salt per day, far exceeding the recommended daily limit of 5 grams set by the World Health Organization (WHO). This was revealed in a recent report by the city's Center for Disease Control (CDC), which raised concerns about the impact of high salt intake on public health.

The CDC has identified excessive salt consumption as one of the major nutritional challenges currently facing Ho Chi Minh City. The increasing prevalence of urbanization, changes in lifestyle, and a general lack of awareness regarding proper nutrition have all contributed to unhealthy eating habits. As a result, there has been a rise in obesity rates and an elevated risk of developing non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, cardiovascular conditions, and kidney disease.

On a national scale, the average daily salt intake across Vietnam has been measured at 8.1 grams, according to data from the 2021 National Survey on Risk Factors for Non-communicable Diseases. While this represents a slight improvement compared to the 9.4 grams recorded in 2015, the figures still remain significantly above WHO recommendations. This persistent issue has prompted health experts to call for increased public awareness and stronger efforts to promote healthier dietary habits.

The Ministry of Health has also expressed growing concern over the increasing consumption of fast food, which is often high in salt and other unhealthy additives. A recent survey conducted among 467 individuals in Ho Chi Minh City, aged between 19 and 39, found that 47% of respondents frequently consume fast food. This trend further exacerbates the problem of excessive salt intake and highlights the need for better nutritional education and public health initiatives aimed at reducing the consumption of salty foods.

Health officials emphasize that excessive salt intake can contribute to serious long-term health complications, making it essential for individuals to adopt healthier eating habits. They recommend gradually reducing salt consumption by cooking with less salt, avoiding highly processed foods, and increasing awareness of sodium content in meals. Public health campaigns and education programs may also play a crucial role in encouraging people to make more informed choices about their diets, ultimately improving overall health and well-being in Ho Chi Minh City and across Vietnam.

Trump brands Zelensky 'a dictator' New Tab ↗

Since assuming office, U.S. President Donald Trump has dramatically shifted policy regarding Ukraine, halting funding and arms support while opening direct negotiations with Moscow.

In a statement on his Truth Social platform, Trump took aim at Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, whose five-year term expired last year. “A Dictator without Elections, Zelenskyy better move fast or he is not going to have a Country left,” Trump wrote, referring to the fact that Ukraine has not held elections since the Russian invasion began. However, under Ukrainian law, elections are not required during wartime.

On Tuesday, Trump held a press conference in which he strongly criticized Zelensky, repeated several Kremlin-backed narratives about the war, and called for a resolution to the conflict. In response, Zelensky accused Trump of falling for Russian "disinformation," particularly regarding Trump's claims that Kyiv was responsible for starting the war and his questioning of Zelensky’s legitimacy.

Trump continued his attacks on Zelensky in another post, stating, “He refuses to have Elections, is very low in Ukrainian Polls, and the only thing he was good at was playing (Joe) Biden ‘like a fiddle.’” He also claimed that only his administration was capable of negotiating an end to the war with Russia.

Despite his declining popularity, Zelensky has maintained majority public trust throughout the conflict. The Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) reports that his approval rating has never fallen below 50% since the war began. However, political pressure continues to mount as Ukraine faces both external threats and internal scrutiny over its leadership.
