Coronavirus researcher 'on verge of major findings' shot dead in murder-suicide

Tiến Sĩ Lưu Băng (Bing Liu), chuyên gia nghiên cứu tế bào và hệ thống sinh học tại Đại học Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania bị phát hiện tử vong hôm thứ Bảy, 2-4-2020 tại nhà riêng ở Elm Court, Penn.

Tờ báo địa phương Phillyvoice và trang mạng của trường Đại học Pittsburgh loan tin.

Chi tiết đặc biệt được cảnh sát Penn quan tâm đó là Tiến sĩ Lưu, 37 tuổi, trợ lư giáo sư nghiên cứu trong khoa sinh học và tế bào gốc của Trường Y, đang có những công tŕnh tập trung vào các đặc điểm khoa học cơ bản của coronavirus, đại dịch toàn cầu có xuất phát điểm từ Vũ Hán, Trung Quốc.

Chuyên khoa trường Đại học Pitts nơi ông Lưu làm việc cho biết rơ trong bản thông cáo của trường: “Tiến sĩ Lưu Băng đang ở một giai đoạn rất sát với những phát hiện có ư nghĩa trong việc t́m hiểu các cơ chế tế bào gây ra việc lây nhiễm virus SARS-CoV-2 và cơ sở tế bào của các biến chứng tiếp theo. Chúng tôi sẽ nỗ lực để hoàn thành những ǵ ông ấy đă đang làm để bày tỏ ḷng tôn kính đối với sự cống hiến xuất sắc của ông ấy dành cho khoa học.”

Theo tiết lộ ban đầu của cảnh sát, vào ngày thứ Bảy 2-5, khi đó Tiến sĩ Lưu ở nhà riêng ở khu phố 200 Elm Court, thị trấn Ross. Một người đàn ông khác, được xác định là Hao Gu, 46 tuổi, đă vào nhà của ông Liu v́ cửa không khoá và nổ súng. Tiến sĩ Liu bị trúng đạn ở đầu, cổ và phần ngực. Ông tử vong ngay sau đó.

Kẻ nổ súng sau đó quay trở lại xe của ông ta đậu ở Charlemagne Circle cách nhà Tiến sĩ Lưu 100 mét và tự bắn vào đầu. Cảnh sát cho biết kẻ hạ thủ và nạn nhân có quen biết nhau nhưng không tiết lộ nguyên nhân dẫn đến vụ ám sát.

Tiến sĩ Ivet Bahar, trưởng khoa Sinh học và tế bào của ngành Y, Đại học Pitts nhận định ông Lưu Băng là một người “rất tài năng, cực kỳ thông minh và chăm chỉ. Ông đă đóng góp cho một số dự án khoa học, xuất bản trên các tạp chí chuyên ngành. Ông là người mà tất cả chúng tôi đều yêu mến, một người rất hiền lành, rất hữu ích, rất hào phóng.”

Cha mẹ Tiến sĩ Lưu Băng vẫn c̣n sống ở Trung Quốc.
