Ông Trump cho biết việc ḿnh quyết định sa thải Bolton bởi "bất đồng sâu sắc với nhiều lời khuyên" của ông này trong thông báo hôm 10/9 trên Twitter.

"Tôi đă thông báo cho John Bolton tối qua rằng sự phục vụ của ông ấy không c̣n cần thiết ở Nhà Trắng nữa. Cũng giống như nhiều quan chức khác trong chính quyền, tôi bất đồng sâu sắc với nhiều đề xuất của ông ấy, nên tôi đă yêu cầu John từ chức", Tổng thống Mỹ Donald Trump viết trên Twitter.

Trump cho hay đơn từ chức đă được Bolton nộp cho ông trong sáng 10/9. "Tôi cảm ơn John rất nhiều v́ quá tŕnh phụng sự của ông ấy. Tôi sẽ thông báo tân Cố vấn An ninh Quốc gia vào tuần tới".

Trump đưa ra thông tin trên Twitter khoảng 90 phút trước khi Bolton dự kiến xuất hiện tại một cuộc họp báo cùng Ngoại trưởng Mỹ Mike Pompeo và Bộ trưởng Tài chính Steven Mnuchin. Bolton sau đó được cho là đă rời Nhà Trắng và sẽ không tham gia họp báo với Pompeo và Mnuchin.

Ngay sau bài đăng của Trump, Bolton thông báo trên Twitter rằng ông không bị sa thải, mà đă đề nghị từ chức tối qua, nhưng Tổng thống nói rằng: "Hăy nói về chuyện đó vào ngày mai".

Trước đó vài ngày, truyền thông Mỹ cho biết Bolton đă phản đối kế hoạch ḥa đàm với nhóm phiến quân Taliban tại Trại David của Trump. Trong khi Trump ủng hộ đề xuất của Ngoại trưởng Pompeo và một số quan chức cấp cao về việc tổ chức cuộc đàm phán với Taliban ở Mỹ, Bolton dù đang ở thăm Ba Lan vẫn liên lạc về Nhà Trắng để phản đối. Kế hoạch ḥa đàm sau đó bị hủy bỏ vào phút chót.

Khi được hỏi có phải mối quan hệ giữa Trump và Bolton trở nên tồi tệ do kế hoạch ḥa đàm với Taliban hay không, thư kư báo chí Nhà Trắng Stephanie Grisham cho biết "rất nhiều vấn đề" đă dẫn tới t́nh huống này.

Trump bổ nhiệm Bolton làm Cố vấn An ninh Quốc gia vào tháng 3/2018, dù quyết định này gây tranh căi bởi Bolton là một trong những tiếng nói ủng hộ cuộc chiến tranh Mỹ phát động ở Iraq năm 2003, trong khi Tổng thống Trump từng cho rằng cuộc chiến này là một "sai lầm lớn".

Là người có quan điểm cứng rắn, Bolton bất đồng với Trump trong nhiều vấn đề, đặc biệt là chính sách với Iran và Triều Tiên. Trong khi Trump ủng hộ đàm phán hướng tới phi hạt nhân hóa hoàn toàn bán đảo Triều Tiên, Bolton lại thiên về cách tiếp cận cứng rắn hơn và hối thúc Trump duy tŕ sức ép tối đa với B́nh Nhưỡng.

Hai người cũng từng bất đồng về cách xử lư vấn đề Iran sau khi quốc gia Vùng Vịnh này ngày 20/5 bắn rơi một máy bay trinh sát không người lái Mỹ gần eo biển Hormuz, khiến căng thẳng giữa hai nước gia tăng.

Trong cuộc phỏng vấn hôm 23/6, Trump nói rằng Bolton "hoàn toàn là một con diều hâu" và cho biết nếu mọi việc phụ thuộc vào Bolton, "ông ấy sẽ cùng lúc đánh nhau với cả thế giới". Tuy nhiên, Tổng thống Mỹ tuyên bố ông cần cả những con "diều hâu" lẫn "bồ câu" trong chính quyền của ḿnh.
