COVID-19: Vietnam records 5,382 new cases, HCM City surpasses 400,000 case mark

A total of 5,382 people have tested positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus in Vietnam during the past 24 hours, with half of them detected in the community, according to the Ministry of Health (MoH) in its 06pm coronavirus update on October 4.

Ho Chi Minh City remains the largest coronavirus hotspot in Vietnam as it registered 2,490 new cases.

It was followed by Binh Duong with 1,210 cases, Dong Nai 701, An Giang 222, and Soc Trang 118, all in the south.

Khanh Hoa topped central localities in infection numbers, reporting 53 cases, followed by Quang Binh with 18 cases, Quang Ngai 17, Binh Dinh 14, Nghe An 10, and Quang Tri 9.

Meanwhile, the COVID-19 outbreak proves complicated in the northern province Ha Nam as 36 new cases were recorded. Nearly 500 cases have been logged in the locality since the virus resurged in early September.

As of 06.00pm on October 4, Vietnam has confirmed 813,961 coronavirus infections, ranking 43rd out of 223 countries and territories worldwide.

Of the total, as many as 809,375 cases have been recorded since the start of the fourth outbreak of COVID-19 in late April 2021.

Notably, the number of infections in HCM City surpassed the 400,000 case mark, hitting 400,003 by October 4.

The same day, the MoH announced that nearly 28,000 COVID-19 patients have been discharged from hospital over the past 24 hours, raising the country’s cumulative total number of recoveries to more than 721,000.

Vietnam has also documented 130 COVID-19 deaths during the day, taking its cumulative death toll to 19,845.

About 45.5 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered so far, with nearly 10.9 people getting their second dose.
