Ngày 18/4 năm 2020, một cuộc biểu t́nh khoảng 200 người đă diễn ra tại Austin, thủ phủ tiểu bang Texas. Những người biểu t́nh đ̣i hỏi chính quyền ngưng t́nh trạng lock down và mở cửa lại — tương tự các cuộc xuống đường cùng ngày tại một số thủ phủ khác như Lansing (Michigan), Columbus (Ohio), và rải rác tại những thành phố nhỏ như Huntington Beach (California)…

Alex Jones, người sáng lập trang InfoWars, yêu cầu Texas lănh đạo quốc gia và mở cửa lại các doanh nghiệp khi hàng trăm người tập trung tại Texas Capitol trong một cuộc biểu t́nh ‘Bạn không thể đóng cửa các cuộc mit tinh ở Mỹ giữa đại dịch virus corona. Nguồn: Scott Ball / Rivard Report

Cuộc xuống đường ở Austin được tổ chức bởi Infowars, với sự hiện diện của nhân vật chính là Alex Jones — sáng lập viên đồng thời là tổng giám đốc của công ty. Infowars là một website chuyên tung tin giả và thuyết âm mưu, ra đời năm 1999, có trụ sở gần Austin. Website của Infowars có khoảng 10 triệu lượt xem hàng tháng, cao hơn cả những tờ báo nghiêm túc như The Economist hay Newsweek.

Trang web của Infowars bày bán những món hàng từ áo nón có in logo của công ty cho tới cà phê, thức ăn đông lạnh, máy lọc không khí… Đặc biệt bán chạy là các loại phụ dược tăng cường sức khoẻ — “dietary supplements”. Cửa tiệm online của Infowars bán khoảng $15-$20 triệu đô la hàng hoá mỗi năm, và đó cũng là nguồn thu nhập chính của công ty.

Mặc dù Hiến Pháp Hoa Kỳ bảo vệ quyền tự do ngôn luận, nhưng v́ fake news của Infowars có tác hại quá nặng đối với công chúng nên một số công ty đă cấm Infowars dùng ứng dụng nền của họ để phát tán tin đồn thất thiệt — trong số đó có Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, iTunes, Roku… Apple đă cấm bán mobile app của Infowars trên Apple Store từ năm 2018.

Hồi tháng Ba năm nay, Google Play Store cũng ra lệnh cấm tương tự sau khi Alex Jones kêu gọi người dân bất tuân những biện pháp pḥng chống virus corona như an trú tại gia, giữ khoảng cách an toàn, đeo khẩu trang khi ra ngoài v.v…

Dẫu vậy, chương tŕnh phát thanh và livestream của Alex Jones vẫn sống mạnh nhờ một lực lượng khán/ thính giả cuồng tín và trung thành. Trong số những người từng làm việc và đóng góp cho Alex Jones có Roger Stone, cựu cố vấn cho ứng cử viên tổng thống Donald Trump năm 2015 (Stone đang lănh bản án 40 tháng v́ 7 tội danh khác nhau sau cuộc điều tra của Robert Mueller năm 2020.)

Theo lời kể của cựu nhân viên Josh Owens trong một bài viết gần đây, Alex Jones tánh t́nh nóng nảy, ăn to nói lớn, thích mua chuộc thuộc hạ bằng quà cáp, ưa lái xe nhanh, và … uống vodka như uống nước!

Thuyết âm mưu do Jones và ban biên tập Infowars đẻ ra nhiều không kể xiết, đủ kiểu, đủ loại: Jones kêu gọi tẩy chay HPV Vaccine; rằng cuộc khủng bố 9/11 là do Mỹ dựng lên; các vụ xả súng từ Stoneman High School cho đến Las Vegas đều là âm mưu của chính quyền nhằm kiếm cớ tịch thu súng đạn của người dân v.v…

Tháng 12 năm 2019, toà Texas đă phạt Alex Jones $100,000 sau khi Infowars bị kiện bởi một phụ huynh có con bị giết trong vụ xả súng tại trường tiểu học Sandy Hook năm 2012 v́ Jones gọi đó là một vụ “lừa bịp” (hoax).

Chứng nào tật nấy, lợi dụng dịch Covid-19 Infowars tung ra thị trường hiệu kem đánh răng Superblue được quảng cáo là có khả năng giúp cơ thể pḥng chống virus corona. Nhưng vào cuối tháng 3 năm nay, công ty đă nhận giấy cảnh báo từ Chưởng Lư bang New York, buộc phải ngưng bán sản phẩm này ngay lập tức v́ không được FDA chuẩn thuận.

Tuy nhiên bà con nào có ḷng từ tâm, muốn giúp Alex Jones trả tiền luật sư tội say rượu lái xe hôm 11 tháng 3 vẫn có thể vào InfowarStore.com mua ủng hộ thuốc khử trùng Organic Hand Sanitizer hiện đang bán giảm giá 50% — 3 chai chỉ có … $29.95!
