Tin từ Washington, D.C. — Trong một cuộc phỏng vấn được công bố vào hôm chủ nhật (ngày 21 tháng 6), Tổng thống Trump đă tŕ hoăn việc áp đặt các biện pháp trừng phạt cứng rắn hơn đối với các viên chức Trung Cộng có trách nhiệm trong việc đàn áp người dân tộc thiểu số Uighur.
Tổng thống Hoa Kỳ giải thích rằng những biện pháp này có thể can thiệp vào một thỏa thuận thương mại lớn trị giá đến 250 tỷ mỹ kim. Liên Hiệp Quốc ước tính rằng hơn một triệu người Hồi giáo đă bị giam giữ trong các trại tập trung ở khu vực Tân Cương (Xinjiang).

Bộ Ngoại giao Hoa Kỳ cáo buộc các viên chức Trung Cộng đă “giam giữ, tra tấn và quấy rối” người Uighur, buộc họ phải xóa bỏ văn hóa và tôn giáo của họ. Trung Cộng đă phủ nhận các cáo buộc nói trên, khẳng định rằng những trại tập trung là nơi đào tạo nghề cho những người Uighur và cần thiết để chống lại chủ nghĩa cực đoan.

Các viên chức Hoa Kỳ trước đây đă nói với Reuters rằng kể từ cuối năm 2018, họ đă cân nhắc các biện pháp trừng phạt đối với các viên chức Trung Cộng về vấn đề ở Tân Cương, nhưng vẫn chưa thực hiện v́ các cân nhắc về thương mại và ngoại giao. Theo thỏa thuận thương mại giai đoạn 1 được thông qua vào năm 2019 có hiệu lực vào tháng 2 vừa qua, Trung Cộng đă đồng ư mua ít nhất 200 tỷ mỹ kim hàng hóa và dịch vụ của Hoa Kỳ trong hai năm.

Trong cuốn hồi kư mới của cựu cố vấn an ninh quốc gia John Bolton, ông cáo buộc Tổng thống Trump đă t́m kiếm sự giúp đỡ của Chủ tịch Trung Cộng Tập Cận B́nh để tái đắc cử trong một cuộc họp giữa hai nhà lănh đạo vào năm 2019, hứa hẹn rằng Hoa Kỳ sẽ mua thêm nông sản từ Trung Cộng cũng như không phản đối họ xây thêm trại cải tạo tại Tân Cương. Tổng thống Trump đă phủ nhận cáo buộc này.
