Default 100,000 students stay home as floods disrupt central Vietnam after storm Trami

Severe flooding from Tropical Storm Trami has led to the closure of schools and kept approximately 100,000 students home in the Vietnamese provinces of Quang Binh and Quang Tri. After days of heavy rainfall, waters have submerged numerous areas, making travel and safety a concern. Duong Hoai Phuong, head of the Education Department in Quang Binh, confirmed that all students in Le Thuy and Quang Ninh districts have been told to stay home, with other flood-impacted areas like Dong Hoi City following suit.

In neighboring Quang Tri, four high schools—including Vinh Linh and Cua Tung—three schools in Dong Ha City, and all schools in Vinh Linh District suspended classes as well. Floodwaters have left some schools under one to two meters of water, impacting nearly 15,000 homes across Le Thuy, Quang Ninh, and Dong Hoi City.

Trami, which made landfall between Thua Thien-Hue and Da Nang with winds up to 88 kph, has resulted in three fatalities and one missing person. Rainfall has exceeded 500 mm in some areas, with forecasted rains expected to continue at 150-250 mm over Monday and Tuesday, and up to 400 mm in areas from southern Ha Tinh to Thua Thien-Hue. Flooding is predicted to persist in Quang Binh as water levels on the Kien Giang River recede gradually.
