The 2nd overlaps with the other 3 = 3

The 4th overlaps with the 5th one = 1
12 small squares on the edge of the pile = 12

Total is: 5 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 + 12= 27

In math, it's called "series function" (I believe it's 10th grade math).
