Default Vietnamese citizens among 7,000 rescued from Myanmar scam networks

Myanmar authorities have detained multiple foreign nationals, including Vietnamese citizens, as part of an ongoing crackdown on online scam operations along the Thailand-Myanmar border, according to Pham Thu Hang, spokesperson for Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

At a press conference on Thursday, Hang confirmed that Vietnam is still verifying the exact number of its nationals affected. The government is actively working with the Ministry of Public Security and has instructed Vietnam’s diplomatic missions in both Thailand and Myanmar to coordinate with local authorities. Their main goal is to identify rescued individuals and implement the necessary citizen protection measures.

Vietnam’s Commitment to Combating Cross-Border Crime
When asked about Vietnam’s broader efforts to combat online scam networks operating along its borders, Hang stated that Vietnamese authorities have been collaborating with neighboring countries to investigate and prosecute Vietnamese citizens involved in such illegal activities. These actions are being carried out in accordance with the laws of both Vietnam and the host countries.

"We believe that all legal violations must be dealt with in line with the law," Hang emphasized. She assured that Vietnamese authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will continue to ensure necessary and timely consular protection for Vietnamese citizens who have been victimized by these criminal networks.

The crackdown comes amid increasing efforts by Myanmar, Thailand, and China to dismantle scam compounds along the border region. These operations, which have exploited tens of thousands of foreign workers, are linked to investment scams, online fraud, and forced labor.
