A Russian-made passenger plane's engine caught fire after landing at Antalya Airport in southern Turkey on Sunday, according to a statement from the Turkish transport ministry.

The ministry reported that landings at the airport were suspended until 03:00 local time (00:00 GMT) while authorities worked to tow the plane off the runway.

The aircraft, a Sukhoi Superjet 100 operated by Azimuth Airlines, had 89 passengers and six crew members on board, all of whom were safely evacuated. The plane had arrived from the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi.

A video shared on social media by the Airport Haber news website showed emergency responders at the scene, with flames and smoke emerging from the plane's engine. Later videos from the transport ministry depicted firefighters spraying foam on the left-side engine to cool it down.

Azimuth Airlines stated that the plane had experienced a rough landing due to wind shear. Russia's Federal Aviation Authority, Rosaviatsiya, has launched an investigation into the incident. According to FlightRadar24, the aircraft was seven years old. Due to Western sanctions linked to Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, the country is facing a shortage of aircraft.
