Why They’ll Never Come For Thanksgiving

The resistance liberals may hate Donald Trump, capitalism, freedom, and protest everything under the American sun, but they will never fully come for Thanksgiving.

It might be because, after nearly a full year of protesting Trump, they are simply exhausted. The baby boomer Trump protesters need some rest after screaming on street corners and inflating life-sized Trump dolls, while the young Zoomers and Millennials, who express their loathing for the president online, might have to log off because mom said so.

Liberals might also realize that turning Thanksgiving into a political fight is a fool’s errand. Ordinary Americans, even if they drift to the left or vote Democrat, love Thanksgiving. We all do. Aside from Christmas, Thanksgiving is the best holiday. You are together with family, loved ones, and friends. You can watch the Detroit Lions play. You can let yourself go, eat and drink your fill, gain ten pounds, and feel no shame about it. Not least important, we all love to reflect and take stock of the blessings in our lives. We all love to be reminded that the most important things in life are family, loved ones, and good health. We all need it. Gratitude is a good feeling.


Perhaps most likely, liberals secretly love Thanksgiving. They love the traditional aspect of it, the dishes their family make every year, the camaraderie of a wine-soaked meal, the games and the laughs, playing football in the backyard. They love the night before, going out with friends, and they love the day after, even if they are hungover, as they feast on leftovers.

Thanksgiving is a beautiful holiday. It is also robust. No matter how bad things get in America, even if the economy were to tank, and millions were laid off, and we entered a second Great Depression, and the planet was engulfed in a third World War, all of us would still find solace on the last Thursday of November. We would still sit down for a meal. We would still count our blessings.

For these reasons, usually even the most radical left-winger will never fully disavow Thanksgiving. Commenting on his refusal to wade into politics and endorse Democrats, Michael Jordon once remarked that Republicans buy sneakers, too. I’d venture to say that even Antifa goobers celebrate Thanksgiving, too.
