Former Vice President Mike Pence recently appeared on CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” where he made it clear that he would prefer a Republican alternative to former President Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election. Remarking that he believes the GOP will have “better choices” than Trump. However, Pence did not say he would not support Trump if he became the GOP nominee

Mike Pence, the Vice President for Trump for four years, also mentioned the Republican Party’s poor performance in recent elections. He suggested that those candidates who dwelled on the past and attempted to review previous elections did not succeed, even in places where they should have had a clear victory. There are reports that Mike Pence may be strategizing a presidential campaign, which might cause friction between himself and President Trump. The latter has refused to recognize Pence for not agreeing with his plan of reversing President Joe Biden’s election victory in 2020. Following Pence’s refusal to cooperate with Trump’s attempt at annulling the elections, an enraged mob of Trump supporters breached the U.S. Capitol building, sending the Vice President and members of Congress into hiding.

When asked about his presidential aspirations, Pence replied cryptically by saying, “I’ll keep you posted.” Many other Republicans have made public their intention to compete in the Republican primary election, including former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley and business magnate Vivek Ramaswamy. Furthermore, Pence shared his thoughts on some of the country’s most pertinent policy matters. When asked about debates in Congress to increase the U.S. debt ceiling and potential alterations to Medicare and Social Security, he recommended that the country looks into long-term improvements to these programs for lasting stability.
Vice President Pence said that the United States’ debt would only worsen over time due to entitlements, but this critical issue is being brushed aside in Washington. He understands how vital Social Security and Medicare are but proposed they should be “on the table in the long term” as part of a plan to fix the country’s long-term debt. Vice President Pence further explored potential changes to these programs, such as increasing the retirement age and launching long-term personal savings accounts. He emphatically stressed the importance of leadership by the presidency and maintained that according to the 2022 midterms results, “elections are about the future.”

Mike Pence did not say how he would fix the country’s entitlement programs, but his comments might start a debate among people with different ideas. In the 2024 presidential race, it is unclear how the Republican Party will respond to Mike Pence’s call for a new Republican leader and his proposals to change entitlement programs.
